How Cosmetic Injectables Work
BOTOX™, Dysport™, XEOMIN™, and Jeuveau™are injectables produced from sterile derivatives of botulinum toxin. Even though they are distinct products, these injectables work in the same way to improve or prevent facial lines and wrinkles. As we age, overactive or tense facial muscles—often caused by excessive frowning and squinting—cause the skin to fold and furrow. When botulinum toxin is injected into the skin, it blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. When these muscles in the face relax, wrinkles fade away and the brow lifts up.
What the Procedure Entails
Any patient who is interested in a cosmetic treatment at Mount Sinai will undergo an extensive consultation. Our team will identify areas of concern, review their goals, and develop an individualized treatment plan.
BOTOX™, Dysport™, XEOMIN™, and Jeuveau™treatments take about 20 minutes and can typically be given during a routine office visit. Many patients have enough time to fit in treatments on their lunch break. The treatment involves a series of small injections and there is minimal discomfort.
What to Expect After BOTOX™
The tiny injections usually result in little to no bruising. The effects of BOTOX™, Dysport™, XEOMIN™, and Jeuveau™usually last between three and six months, at which point muscle activity returns to normal. As an elective treatment, these relaxing agents can be administered whenever the effects wear off or over longer periods of time when it is convenient for the patient.
Cost of Cosmetic Injectables
Cost is always a concern, as insurance does not generally cover surgery or treatment that is done purely for cosmetic reasons. We provide patients with expected costs prior to any intervention.
