At the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in New York, where I work, approximately 25 percent of our girls and young women have been sexually abused, and nearly seven out of 10 have experienced some type of trauma. Access to high quality health care and health education, including sexual and reproductive health, is essential for the fulfillment of the promise with which each girl is born. In early childhood, regular medical care, including immunizations, provides a healthy foundation for life, while allowing for the detection of health and behavioral issues that can be improved or alleviated through early intervention.
