For years, parents worried about the risk of peanut allergies were told to delay introducing their kids to food containing the nut until age 3. No longer. In the wake of research showing that the opposite approach is called for, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases earlier this year came out with new guidance. “The short version is: Eat it before you become allergic to it,” said Scott Sicherer, MD, professor of pediatrics, allergy and immunology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “It’s not foolproof, and it doesn’t apply to children already diagnosed with a peanut allergy. Once diagnosed as allergic, they’ll avoid the food,” added Dr. Sicherer. For now, the new prevention advice is limited to peanuts.
