In most states, sunscreen is not allowed in schools without a doctor’s note because the FDA considers sunscreen an over-the-counter medication. This is particularly worrisome to parents working to make sunscreen available, who point out that 500 children are diagnosed with melanoma per year. “Even one sunburn in childhood doubles your risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, later in life,” said Joshua Zeichner, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
