Pitavastatin was superior to pravastatin in lowering fasting serum LDL cholesterol concentrations among adults with HIV and dyslipidemia, according to a study. The pitavastatin group exhibited significantly greater reductions in other atherogenic variables, such as non-HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B, compared to the pravastatin group, the authors wrote in The Lancet HIV. "The use of statins in the setting of ART has been challenging because of drug interactions, which are sometimes unpredictable, leading to intolerance or reduced efficacy," wrote Judith Aberg, MD, chief of the division of infectious diseases and immunology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and colleagues.
