A new study finds a link between youth football at an early age and certain brain disorders. Kids who played tackle football before age 12 had twice the risk of behavior regulation, apathy and three times the risk of elevated depression scores than those who played after age 12.  “This is a very critical time for development and naturalization of the brain structures that underlines our ability to think and feel,” says Kristen Damas-O’Connor, MD, co-director, Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai. “It is also concerning that those effects took years to show up and lasted well into middle age.”
