Mark G. Lebwohl, MD, Took Office as President of the American Academy of Dermatology
Mark G. Lebwohl, MD, Sol and Clara Kest Professor of Dermatology and Chair of the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, took office as president of the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) on March 24th at the conclusion of the Academy’s 73rd Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. He will hold the office of president for one year.
"I am honored to assume this position, and will use my term to serve as an advocate for patients," said Dr. Lebwohl. "Quality care will be the focus of my presidency."
As president, his responsibilities will include formulating and executing policies that benefit patients and physicians and directing the Academy’s mission as the world’s largest dermatologic society, representing more than 18,000 physicians specializing in the diagnosis and medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair, and nail conditions.
Dr. Lebwohl completed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology at Mount Sinai and has been practicing dermatology since 1983. He has transformed Mount Sinai's Dermatology Department from a faculty of two to one of the largest in the nation, with more than 40 paid faculty and nearly 250 voluntary faculty members.
“Dr. Lebwohl has devoted his career to developing new dermatologic treatments as well as to treating patients," said Dennis Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. "He helped pioneer the use of topical agents that harness the immune system to treat precancerous skin lesions and skin cancers; the use of topical calcineurin inhibitors for psoriasis; and many targeted biologic therapies for psoriasis, vitiligo and other diseases."
Past chairman of the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation (term 2002-2014), Dr. Lebwohl is also the founding editor of Psoriasis Forum. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and of the Journal of Skin Cancer and is editor of the Dermatology Section of Scientific American Medicine.
Dr. Lebwohl has chaired numerous symposia and has authored or coedited more than 10 books, including the first atlas devoted entirely to cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases, as well as the world's leading book on dermatologic therapy, Treatment of Skin Disease. He has co-authored more than 500 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, invited articles and book chapters.
