Rosanne M. Leipzig, MD, PhD, Named to National Board of Medical Examiners

In her new role, Dr. Leipzig will represent the Council of Medical Specialty Societies and share the viewpoints, issues, and health policy concerns of more than 700,000 medical specialists nationwide.

Rosanne M. Leipzig, MD, PhD, Gerald and Mary Ellen Ritter Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has been appointed to the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), an organization that provides the national standard assessment for health care practitioners in preparation for medical licensure. Dr. Leipzig is also Vice Chair for Education of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine.

In her new role on the NBME, Dr. Leipzig will represent the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) and share the viewpoints, issues, and health policy concerns of more than 700,000 medical specialists nationwide who are part of the CMSS.

"I am honored to be appointed to such a prestigious organization so critical to ensuring that health care professionals provide a high standard of care to their patients," said Dr. Leipzig. "The NBME is charged with assuring that when medical students graduate, they are competent to be interns caring for patients. I look forward to being involved in discussions of how this might best be done."

Dr. Leipzig was the recipient of one of the first Brookdale National Fellowships in Geriatric Medicine and was also named one of the first Joy McCann Scholars for exemplary leadership and mentorship in medical education. She has received several awards, including the American College of Physicians Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award, the ACP-New York Laureate Award, and the 2008 Dennis Jahnigen award from the American Geriatrics Society in recognition of her contributions to geriatrics education nationally. She serves on the United States Preventive Services Task Force and has just completed a term on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Focused on evidence-based medicine in treating the elderly, Dr. Leipzig has developed models for teaching geriatrics, chronic care, and evidence-based medicine. Dr. Leipzig is the principal investigator of a grant from the D.W. Reynolds Foundation to improve the training of non-geriatricians in geriatric medicine, and the inventor of the Portal of Online Geriatric Education (www.POGOe.org), a web-based clearinghouse for geriatric educational materials also supported by the Reynolds Foundation. She has published more than 80 scientific articles.

The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment is the mission of the NBME, along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement. In addition, the NBME provides testing, educational, consultative, and  research services to a number of medical specialty boards and societies and healthcare organizations in the United States and internationally. The NBME membership is composed of approximately 80 individuals representing the academic community, national professional organizations, state licensing boards, students, residents, the federal government and the public.
