Diane Meier, MD, the Catherine Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics, Chief of the Division of Geriatrics for the Department of Medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, and a MacArthur Fellow for 2008, has been honored by AARP with its 50th Anniversary Social Impact Award.

Dr. Meier has been a faculty member in the Mount Sinai Department of Geriatrics since 1983. She established and is the Director of Mount Sinai’s Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute, a model program that assists patients and families in navigating the complexities of serious illness and devises strategies for managing pain and other symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, and loss of appetite.

She also directs the Center to Advance Palliative Care, an organization affiliated with Mount Sinai which provides health care professionals with the tools, training, financial guidance, and technical assistance necessary to start and sustain successful palliative care programs in hospitals and other health care settings.

AARP was founded by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired school teacher who used every opportunity to focus America’s leaders and the public on the needs of others. In commemoration of its 50th year, AARP is recognizing the achievements of New Yorkers who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to enhancing the lives of New Yorkers, improving their communities, and inspiring others.

This year AARP is celebrating 50 years of helping people achieve independence, choice and control throughout their lives, said Lois Aronstein, AARP New York State Director. "In honor of this milestone, AARP New York is paying tribute to the legacy and successes of 50 New Yorkers, like Dr. Meier, whose work and achievements live up to Dr. Andrus’ motto and who have been our champions of social change."

Dr. Meier has our thanks and gratitude for raising awareness and fostering a dialogue on these complex issues to professionals, the media, and to families throughout New York, said Aronstein.
