A recent study in the American Journal of Medicine about the uptick in cases of rhabdomyolysis, known as rhabdo, happening as a result of spin class, had people everywhere afraid of SoulCycle. At its core, rhabdo simply means the breakdown of muscle tissue, said Alexis Colvin, MD, associate professor of orthopaedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the chief medical officer for the US Tennis Association. As muscles break down, they release the enzyme creatine kinase and a protein called myoglobin into your bloodstream, which can lead to three serious health complications — kidney failure, acute compartment syndrome, and electrolyte abnormalities.
