"Why Stress May Be Fueling the Childhood Asthma Epidemic"

Detroit has the highest rate of asthma among young children in America’s 18 largest cities. Experts link the asthma epidemic to urban ills that could affect the children's health and learning for the rest of their lives. The latest work of Rosalind Wright, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, shows that stress in itself, irrespective of poverty or environmental toxins, can cause asthma. “The data is there, it says that psychological stress is a factor, just like those other physical factors,” Dr. Wright said.
