Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing for seconds, even minutes, during sleep because an airway becomes narrow or blocked. Up until recently, a tracheostomy was the only permanent solution. "That is the probably only known way of curing sleep apnea, creating a bypass of the upper airway. But no one's going to want to wear a tube that's permanent in the neck," says Dr. Fred Lin, the director of Mount Sinai’s Sleep Surgery Center.
