Fox 5 New York - Mount Sinai Docs Give Patient Artificial Heart
Daquain Jenkins was diagnosed with congestive heart failure back in 2008 and he received a donor heart but it failed. So in August he received an artificial heart until another donor match can be found. He’s the first person in the New York area and among only about 40 in the entire country who have this portable power device connected to his artificial heart, allowing him to leave the hospital. “When he’s at home, he can plug it into the wall power supply and when he goes out he just has to take enough batteries. Each pair of batteries lasts two hours,” said Dr. Anelechi Anyanwu of Mount Sinai. “We anticipated being able to support him for months or even years. There’s certainly been people who have been on support for at least two years with this device,” said Dr. Sean Pinney, also at Mount Sinai.
