"Echocardiography 'Overuse' in Inpatients Challenged by US National Data"
Transthoracic echocardiography is followed by improved survival in patients admitted with acute MI and other cardiovascular conditions, yet it is ordered in less than 10% of such patients with appropriate indications, claims an analysis based on a US national database. "We all agree that echocardiography should not be done for inappropriate reasons, but why would you not want to use it where it's been shown to be most useful?" said Partho Sengupta, MD, director of interventional echocardiography at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
