Dr. Annie Tao is an Assistant Professor and licensed clinical psychologist who provides outpatient treatment to children, adolescents, and adults. She received her doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was awarded the prestigious APA Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Predoctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Tao completed an APA-accredited internship at the University of Washington. For her post-doctoral training, she was awarded the Leadership and Education in Adolescent Health Fellowship at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Tao was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Tao specializes in treating mood and anxiety disorders in all ages, including but not limited to depression, bipolar disorder, separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and panic disorder. Dr. Tao has a strong background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and received extensive training in comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy with recognized DBT experts at the University of Washington. She served as a treatment provider within Seattle Children’s Hospital’s comprehensive adolescent DBT program, treating teens with emotion dysregulation and suicidality. Dr. Tao also has expertise in Behavioral Activation for depression and Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy for bipolar disorder.

Additionally, Dr. Tao is an early childhood specialist, having played a key role in establishing HealthySteps (a program focused on early childhood development and effective parenting) at two pediatric primary care practices during her time as an Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Co-located in the pediatrician’s office, Dr. Tao saw all children ages 0-5 referred for common and complex early childhood issues, including temper tantrums, toileting, parent-child bonding, separation anxiety, bedtime and sleep, etc. Dr. Tao also has expertise in parental mental health and treats mothers with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Tao has a strong publication record, having conducted and spearheaded research in the areas of parenting, children’s emotion regulation, culture, and children’s stress system activation. In her current position, she conducts research within the Pediatric Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program. Previously, Dr. Tao conducted research led by Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, bringing cutting edge techniques of measuring stress system activation to young children in the Bronx. For her dissertation on the impact of cumulative adversity on children’s adjustment outcomes, she was awarded the Sheldon J. Korchin Dissertation Prize.
