Timothy Blenkinsop's laboratory works to understand the basic biology of the adult human eye in an effort to reveal mechanisms for regeneration. We are currently focused on RPE and RPE related diseases. Our approach is to develop in vitro models of the adult human RPE layer from human donors with RPE related disease in order to more carefully study disease pathology and identify compounds that can improve disease progression. We also explore the epigenetic state of RPE in normal and pathological conditions in order to understand how the cell state is regulating gene expression. Finally, we are attempting to develop a transplantation method whereby healthy human RPE from donors can be transplanted into patients where RPE are damaged or lost to preserve or improve vision.
