Dr. Choudhri is a board-certified neurosurgeon and Co-Director of the Neurosurgery Spine Program in Mount Sinai's Department of Neurosurgery. After graduating with distinction (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, he completed his neurosurgery training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and NY Neurological Institute. He then completed additional spine fellowship training at the Barrow Neurological Institute under Dr. Sonntag, an internationally-renowned spine surgeon.
Dr. Choudhri's chief clinical interests include:
- Cervical spine disorders/surgery
- Minimally-invasive spine surgery (cervical and lumbar)
- Intradural spine tumor surgery
- Sports neurosurgery, including concussion management
His overall practice covers a wide range of spinal disorders:
- Minimally-invasive spine surgery: microscopic/endoscopic surgery
- Craniovertebral junction disorders: chiari malformation, occipital-cervical instability
- Cervical spine disorders: neck/arm pain, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylosis
- Thoracic spine disorders: herniated discs, tumors, paraspinal biopsies
- Lumbosacral spine disorders: low back/leg pain, herniated discs, spinal stenosis
- Spinal trauma and spinal cord injury
- Spinal tumors: intramedullary, intradural, extradural, paraspinal
- Spinal deformity: scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal instability, post-op kyphosis repair
- Congenital spine disease: diastematomyelia, dermal sinus, myelomeningocele
- Peripheral nerve surgery: carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve, meralgia paresthetica and tumors
Dr. Choudhri frequently participates in educating other spine surgeons at national/international conferences. He is active in leading Neurosurgical and Spine organizations and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves and the Joint Section on Neurotrauma. He has served on national multispecialty committees that developed and published guidelines for lumbar and cervical spine surgery. Dr. Choudhri has co-edited a textbook, Fundamentals of Operative Techniques in Neurosurgery.
Dr. Choudhri has been selected for inclusion in numerous "best doctor" lists including Castle Connolly Top Doctors and NY Metro Top Doctors (2013-2017), Best Doctors in America (2007-2008), Montclair Who's Who in Healthcare (2008-2009), and New York Super Doctors (2009).
Dr. Choudhri's research interests focus on spinal injury, cervicalspinal disorders, minimally-invasive techniques, and improving outcome from spine surgery and diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) including concussions and subconcusive injuries.
Dr. Choudhri is a collaborating consultant for Concussion Management of New York and a member of the Mount Sinai Play Safe Program, which provides multidisciplinary care to injured atheltes and technical assistance, as well as education to families and school personnel.

National expert member (one of 20). The expert panel evaluates the patients being entered into the trial to establish clinical equipoise. The CSM-S trial is a prospective randomized multicenter trial evaluating clinical and socioeconomic outcome following anterior versus posterior surgical intervention for CSM.
Pfizer STRIVE Trial
Mount Sinai Principal Investigator for STRIVE Trial, a multicenter trial designed to test the efficacy and safety of a vaccine to help prevent infection in people undergoing multi-level spinal fusion surgery.
StemCells Pathway Trial: Mount Sinai
Co-investigator and member of surgical team. The Pathway Trial is designed to test the efficacy and safety of stem cell injection on patients with AIS, A, B, and C chronic spinal cord injury.
InVivo 100-101 Trial: Mount Sinai
Co-investigator on the InVivo 100-101 Trial, which is designed to test the safety of a Scaffold device on patients with complete AIS A acute spinal cord injury.
Vertex VX-210 Trial: Mount Sinai
Co-investigator on the VX-210 Trial, which is designed to test the efficacy and safety of the VX-210 drug on patients with AIS A or B acute spinal cord injury.
