Suzanne Bentley, MD

About Me

Dr. Suzanne Bentley attended the University of Medicine & Dentistry - New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS) graduating in 2007.  She was a member of AOA.  Dr. Bentley completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Mount Sinai in 2011, serving as Chief Resident 2010-2011, and completed a Masters of Public Health at the Mount Sinai SOM while in residency. She completed a Simulation & Advanced Learning fellowship at the New York City Health + Hospitals Institute of Medical Simulation & Advanced Learning in 2014. She joined the Emergency Medicine faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine in 2011 upon graduation and served as the Emergency Medicine Residency Site Director until 2015. Dr. Bentley helped create and launch the Elmhurst Center for Simulation in 2015 and is currently the Medical Director of the Center, overseeing simulation programming for the hospital-wide simulation center serving Elmhurst Hospital.


Dr. Bentley holds the faculty title of Associate Professor in both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education at Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai.  She is the Co-Director of Helping Healers Heal at Elmhurst Hospital, a program working to support all hospital staff, decrease burnout, and minimize second victim syndrome. She currently serves on the Executive Board of the SAEM Simulation Academy, is the Secretary of the International Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s Emergency Medicine Section, and serves on a number of national and local emergency medicine, medical education, and simulation committees. Her current interests include simulation (especially insitu simulation), debriefing, teamwork training, communication, patient safety, simulation for systems testing, curriculum design, procedure education, assessment, and wellness. She is a Harvard Macy Institute for Healthcare Professions Scholar and was awarded a grant to participate in the American College of Emergency Physicians Teaching fellowship. She won the 2020 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai Institute of Medical Education, the 2019 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Simulation Academy Young Educator Award, the 2019 Society for Simulation in Healthcare Emergency Medicine Section Innovation in Education Award, the 2019 New York City Health + Hospitals Patient Safety Champion Award, a 2019 Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai Institute for Medical Education Education Research Day Blue Ribbon Award and won the 2017 Health + Hospitals Physician of the Year Award for Excellence in Simulation.


Dr. Bentley has contributed to numerous peer reviewed publications on the subjects of simulation, debriefing, and medical education and serves as a manuscript reviewer for a variety of journals.
