About Me

Sumru Tufekcioglu, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. She is a voluntary faculty member at Mount Sinai Morningside/West Hospitals in the Psychiatry Residency Program and Psychology Training Program where she was the recipient of the 2019 Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Tufekcioglu is an instructor and supervisor at the William Alanson White Institute in the Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program. She serves as President of the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Candidates’ Council and an Executive Editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. Dr. Tufekcioglu is in private practice in New York City where she sees adults and adolescents for psychotherapy and psychoanalytic treatment.

Dr. Tufekcioglu completed her psychology training at New York University and Adelphi University – Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology followed by postdoctoral fellowship at Mount Sinai Morningside and West Hospitals. She then completed psychoanalytic training at the William Alanson White Institute.

During training, she has conducted psychotherapy research, specializing in psychotherapy process and therapeutic alliance. She has extensive experience in models of psychotherapy and published on the topics of psychotherapy process in CBT and psychodynamic psychotherapy with personality disorders, complex trauma, case formulation, therapist self-disclosure, and the millennial culture and psychoanalysis. Her interests include psychotherapy integration, and supervision and training aimed at helping trainees develop their own style in psychotherapy.

She specializes in personality disorders, complex trauma, PTSD, and mood disorders.
