About Me

Shanna Patterson, MD, MS is an attending physician in the Department of Neurology at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside, and is the Neurology Site Chair at these hospitals. She is the Director of Special Projects in System-wide Neurology Clinical Operations, and also serves as the founding Patient Education Advisor for the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy. Her clinical focus is on the evaluation and treatment of neuromuscular symptoms and conditions, as well as peripheral nerve and muscle electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS).

A native of California, Dr. Patterson completed both her BS in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience and her MD at the University of California at San Diego. She completed her Neurology Residency and fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. In 2022 Dr. Patterson completed her Masters of Healthcare Delivery Leadership at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Patterson is involved in driving a variety of clinical, quality improvement and administrative initiatives.

Dr. Patterson is interested in improving patient safety and experience. In 2020 she completed her LEAN Green Belt in process improvement, and in 2021 a Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. She was selected to participate in the Mount Sinai Health System LEAD program in 2018-2019, where she studied faculty engagement and applications of emotional intelligence in optimizing patient care. Dr. Patterson has also served as a Communication Champion for the Mount Sinai Health System and contributed as part of the Patient Experience Committee at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital. At Mount Sinai West she led the expansion of inpatient neurological service lines during a period of growth for this neurosciences tertiary referral center.

She has presented at a number of meetings and conferences, and her publications include manuscripts and text chapters on topics including neurological complications of COVID-19, disorders of the peripheral nervous system in intensive care patients, myasthenia gravis, and neurological complications of Celiac disease. Dr. Patterson was recognized as the Society of Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital’s Distinguished Young Physician in 2018, and in 2022 was awarded the Excellence in Health Care Leadership Award by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
