About Me

Dr. Karani received her B.S. in Biology from Brown University and her M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and her fellowship, chief fellowship and research fellowship in Geriatrics at Icahn School of Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Karani also holds a Masters in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.


Dr. Karani has been integrally involved in educating learners at all levels. She has been a faculty member in the Art and Science of Medicine course, the Integrated Internal Medicine-Geriatrics Clerkship, the Internal Medicine Residency Program and the Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Programs. Dr. Karani has served as a course co-director of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation’s Master Clinician-Educator Program in Geriatrics, the Mini-Fellowship in Geriatrics for the Non-Geriatrician and the Investigator Education Skills Training (INVEST) Program.

 

Dr. Karani was a recipient of a HRSA Career Development Award and her research interests include performance based learner assessment, knowledge and skill transfer and novel curricular approaches in health professions education. She has presented her work nationally and internationally at meetings including the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), American Geriatrics Society (AGS), World Gerontology Conference and The Association for Medical Education of Europe. She is the author of numerous peer reviewed publications focused on medical education and has served as a mentor to students, residents, fellows and faculty.

 

Dr. Karani’s honors include Sigma Xi Scientific Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Presidential Award in Medical Education from AGS, the John A. Hartford Center of Excellence Scholar, the Teacher of the Year Award from the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics, the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Master Educator from the Institute of Medical Education, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
