Dr. Nita Vangeepuram is a pediatrician and clinical researcher in the Division of General Pediatrics. She completed an accelerated BS/MD program at Stevens Institute of Technology and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. She then completed her pediatrics residency training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and her joint fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics and Environmental Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she also received her Master of Public Health degree. Her early research included epidemiologic studies of factors related to childhood asthma and obesity. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control, New York State, and foundation support to develop and implement programs for treatment and prevention of obesity and related conditions in urban, minority youth. Her current study uses community-based participatory research as well as other novel methods (peer education and mobile health technologies) to develop a model for prevention of Type 2 diabetes among at-risk East Harlem youth. She is a member of Mount Sinai’s Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism Institute, Center for Health Equity and Community-Engaged Research and Pediatrics Research Committee, as well as a member of several East Harlem committees focused on improvement of health within the local community.
