Dr. Michael Neuwirth is a Professor of Orthopedics at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Prior to moving his practice to Mount Sinai Hospital on January 1, 2013 he was Director of The New York Spine Institute and Director of the fellowship program at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.
Prior to joining Beth Israel he was Chief of Spinal Surgery at The Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. He is a graduate of SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed his residency in orthopedics at The Hospital for Joint Diseases. He completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Neuwirth’s practice is limited exclusively to spinal surgery. His areas of expertise and special interest include Scoliosis, Kyphosis and Spinal Deformity. He also focuses on degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and myelopathy.
Approximately 30 percent of Dr. Neuwirth’s practice is devoted to revision surgery. He also incorporates the latest advances in minimally invasive surgery to reduce surgical risk and shorten recovery time. He has authored numerous articles and has contributed chapters to many textbooks on spinal surgery. Dr. Neuwirth is the author of THE SCOLIOSIS HANDBOOK, a guide specifically devoted to educating teenagers and adults with scoliosis. Dr. Neuwirth has lectured extensively in the United States and Internationally.
Dr. Neuwirth is currently a member of The North American Spine Society (NASS) and The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). He is a former board member of the SRS. He has been selected by Castle and Connolly Top Doctors for the New York Metropolitan Area for orthopedic spine surgery for the past 10 years. He has also been selected multiple times for New York Magazine’s Top Doctors. Dr. Neuwirth is one of the most highly respected orthopedic spine surgeons in the Northeast. He has trained over 30 fellows in spinal surgery who have established successful practices throughout the country. They are further testimony to Dr. Neuwirth’s continuing impact on the future of spinal surgery.
