About Me

Dr. Mala Balakumar has been in practice as a colorectal surgeon for over 20 years. After earning her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Balakumar completed both her internship and residency in General Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. Upon completing an additional General Surgery residency at New York Hospital Medical Center Queens, Dr. Balakumar entered into her fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery at the Carle Foundation Hospital. She then finished her extensive training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where she studied endorectal ultrasound and anorectal physiology/manometry. With her board certifications by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery, Dr. Balakumar specializes in laparoscopic and open surgery, as well as pelvic floor treatment.

Dr. Balakumar holds two academic positions: Assistant Clinical Professor for Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan and the Division Chief of Colorectal Surgery and preceptor for medical students at Montefiore-New Rochelle. In addition to her teaching roles, Dr. Balakumar is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Vice Chair of the CME committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

When she is not with patients, Dr. Balakumar gives back through community events, such as soup kitchens and lunch & learn series for the Hospital. In her additional free time, Dr. Balakumar participates in television events and free health clinics for patients.
