Dr. Mathews is an Assistant Professor, adult intensivist, and a health services researcher in both the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Her research focuses on improving health care delivery and outcomes for critically ill patients both in and outside the intensive care unit (ICU). She also is the Associate Program Director of the PCCSM Fellowship, leading its Research Training Program.
Dr. Matthews’ primary clinical responsibilities are as an attending physician at The Mount Sinai Hospital within the Medical Intensive Care Unit. Her clinical expertise is in respiratory failure and acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome. She also serves as a Co-Investigator for Mount Sinai on the NHLBI Clinical Trials Network for the Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL). Her research has been supported by the NHLBI and the American Thoracic Society Foundation, including grants to examine triage decisions in care delivery for critically ill ED patients at the emergency department (ED)-ICU interface. Her research areas include pre-ICU critical care delivery, ED-ICU transitions of care, and organizational and operations research, as it relates to both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 related critical illness. Other research focus areas are trainee research education and early career development.
Dr. Mathews completed her internship and residency at Yale University School of Medicine (YSM)/Yale-New Haven Hospital. After residency, she spent a year as an Instructor in YSM Section of General Internal Medicine, serving as a clinician educator in the Yale Primary Care Clinic. She then completed a clinical and T32-funded research fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Yale. After joining the faculty at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in 2013, Dr. Mathews was a K-12 scholar with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)-funded Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine Research Career Development Program. As part of the program, she completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree.
