John E. Madias, MD has served as Chief of Cardiology at Elmhurst Hospital Center, between 7/1/83 to 1/1/2002 and Director of our approved Cardiology Fellowship program, until our program was transitioned to the currently offered Mount Sinai's Urban Community Cardiology Fellowship Program, an educational initiative linked with Mount Sinai's principal municipal hospital affiliate, the City Hospital Center at Elmhurst, Queens, serving one of the nation's most ethnically diverse populations, and then as an Attending at the Department of Cardiology at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Prior positions held were that of the Director of the CCU at Boston City Hospital, Boston University School of Medicine, Director of the Heart Station at Boston City Hospital, Boston University School of Medicine, and then as an Attending at the same institution. Dr. Madias was educated at the Kapodistrian National University in Athens, Greece, had his postgraduate education in medicine at Salem (internship), St. Elizabeth’s, and Carney hospitals (medical residency), Boston MA, and cardiology fellowships at Waltham Hospital/Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Boston City Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and subsequently Boston University School of Medicine, with rotations at Peter Bent Brigham, and Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, at his final year of cardiology fellowship.
Dr. Madias is an academic clinical cardiologist dedicated to the management of cardiac patients with all varieties of pathology, teaching of medical students, residents and cardiology fellows, and clinical research. His interest in electrocardiography focused on precordial mapping in the sizing of acute myocardial infarction and monitoring of the effect of therapeutic responses to interventions. He then investigated issues pertaining to variant (Prinzmetal’s) angina, and its association with development of acute myocardial infarction. Subsequently he investigated the response of the QRS attenuation resulting from edematous states, like congestive heart failure, renal failure, sepsis, e.t.c, and other conditions leading to peripheral edema, and the augmentation of the QRS resulting after diuresis. For a number of years, he devoted time in rehearsing electrocardiogram T-wave alternans in predicting sudden cardiac death in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Other research work was focused at morphological QRS and T-wave alterations in patients with apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. For the past 8 years has directed his research endeavors in all aspects of takotsubo syndrome, particularly its elusive pathophysiology. The above research work has resulted in over 650 publications in peered reviewed medical and cardiology journals. Dr. Madias is a frequent journal reviewer of submitted manuscripts from national and international journals in the areas of his expertise.
Dr. Madias and his wife Niki reside in Hartsdale NY. Their son, Elias is a urologist practicing in Athens Greece, son Mark is a cinematographer working in Greek TV channels, and daughter Vikki is a lawyer, working in a law firm in Manhattan, NY.
