About Me

James F. Crismale, MD, is an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and practices liver medicine and gastroenterology at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens. Dr. Crismale provides specialized care with a focus on liver diseases, such as those caused by fatty liver disease, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and autoimmune liver disease. He also specializes in the care of patients interested in evaluation for liver transplantation, including those with liver cancer, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension—in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team at the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute. By building trusting and long-term relationships with patients through the diagnosis, treatment, and management of their medical conditions, he places an emphasis on improving health outcomes following liver transplantation.

In addition to a dedication to patient care, Dr. Crismale is committed to scholarship. His current research focuses on finding ways to improve patient outcomes both before and after liver transplantation, and on the impact of the new treatments for Hepatitis C in the context of liver transplantation.

Dr. Crismale received his medical degree from the Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. After medical school, he went on to complete a residency and serve as Chief Medical Resident in internal medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He continued his training at The Mount Sinai Hospital as a fellow in gastroenterology, and was selected to fast-track into a fellowship in advanced/transplant hepatology via the AASLD/ABIM Transplant Hepatology Pilot program. Dr. Crismale was subsequently recruited to the faculty of the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens. He currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program.
