Gabriel A. Sara, MD is a Senior Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai West where he serves as the Medical Director of the Chemotherapy Infusion Suite and the Executive Director of the Patient Services Initiative. In addition, he is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Sara received his early medical training in Beirut, Lebanon and his Doctorate of Medicine in Paris, France. In 1981, he moved to New York and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Downstate Medical Center then a fellowship in Hematology and Medical oncology at Roosevelt Hospital and The Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia University). He is triple-board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. In 1987, he joined Roosevelt Hospital as a voluntary attending and was very involved in the teaching program in the Department of Medicine and the Division of Hematology/Oncology. In 2008, Dr. Sara left his private practice and became a full-time faculty member at Mount Sinai West (formerly Roosevelt Hospital) in his capacity of Director of the Chemotherapy Infusion Suite and Executive Director of the Patient Services Initiative. He is a member of various professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group.
Dr. Sara has been cited yearly since 1997 in the Hematology/Oncology section of “Top Doctors: New York Metro Area” by Castle Connolly and in the “Super Doctors” edition of the New York Times Magazine from 2008-present. He was recognized as a “Best Doctor” by New York Magazine in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and was the recipient of the 2004 “Wholeness of Life” award for St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. In 2014, he was the recipient of the “Listener of the Year” award from the “International Listening Association” (http://www.listen.org/listeneryear).
In 2015, he was the recipient of the “What a Wonderful World Award” from the Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine Mount Sinai Beth Israel. In 2005, Dr. Sara established “The Helen Sawaya Fund”, a philanthropy program whose mission is to enhance the experience of cancer patients through art, music, reflexology, a travel program and more. This comprehensive program is unique in New York City. Since 2003, he has been coaching nurses and physicians about resilience in the work place with a monthly meeting that has become very well-known and was written up in the Wall Street Journal as a model of “Training Doctors to manage their feelings” (05/19/2016).
Dr. Sara has published several articles in the field of hematology and oncology.
In 2013, Dr. Sara co-edited the textbook “Music and Medicine: Integrative Models in the Treatment of Pain”.
In June 2018, he was a plenary session guest speaker at the 5th Convention of the International Music and Medicine Association where he gave a lecture about “Music and Cancer”.
He remains very involved in the teaching of students, residents and fellows at Mount Sinai West where he also serves on various hospital committees.
