About Me

Dr. Avniel Shetreat-Klein works to restore function and prevent disability in those suffering from musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. Dr. Shetreat-Klein treats patients with a wide range of impairments including stroke, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular diseases, neck, back, and limb pain, arthritis, neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and trauma. After a performing a detailed history and physical examination, Dr. Klein tailors an individualized, multidisciplinary plan of care, drawing upon pharmacological management, physical and occupational therapy, joint and trigger point injections, nutrition, and behavior modification. With these tools, Dr. Shetreat-Klein helps patients to return to their maximal functional state.

Dr. Shetreat-Klein is particularly interested in the use of electrodiagnostic techniques such as EMG and NCS to diagnose and evaluate pain, weakness and sensory loss in conditions such as radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and brachial plexopathies. In addition to his outpatient practice, Dr. Shetreat-Klein is currently serving as an attending physician on the inpatient Spinal Cord Unit, and provides consultation services to patients throughout the Medical Center.

Dr. Avniel Shetreat-Klein graduated magna cum laude from Columbia College in 1994 and entered the MD/Ph.D. program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Shetreat-Klein's graduate thesis explored mechanisms by which sensory input can directly affect centrally generated motor output. Explorations of these basic neural mechanisms have the potential to influence future research into therapies for neurological recovery. After receiving his MD and a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology, he continued on to residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai, where he served as Chief Resident in the final year of his training.
