The plastic and reconstructive surgeons at The Mount Sinai Hospital perform several procedures that enhance the appearance of patient's breasts. These include:
- Breast Augmentation: This procedure, known as augmentation mammaplasty, enlarges the breasts with implants. An implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or saline, a solution of salt and water. The surgeon places the implant either under the breast tissue or behind the chest wall muscle. Insertion method and placement depend on the anatomy of each patient. This operation may be performed for cosmetic reasons, to reconstruct the breast after a mastectomy, or correct genetic deformities.
- Breast Lift: This common, but complex, procedure raises and reshapes sagging breasts. It can be performed with or without inserting breast implants. The surgeon typically reshapes the breast by moving skin from above the nipple and sewing it in place below the nipple and removing the excess skin. The procedure may involve repositioning the nipple.
- Breast Reduction: This procedure, known as reduction mammaplasty, makes the breasts lighter and smaller. Reducing breast size can provide relief from physical discomfort for women with large breasts, including breast, back, neck, and shoulder pain. The surgeon can also reduce the size of the areola, the darkened skin around the nipple, to make it more proportional with the rest of the woman's body. The procedure typically reshapes the breast by moving skin from above the nipple on both sides and sewing it in place below the nipple to create a new shape. The surgeon removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin during the process. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with this surgery.
- Breast Reconstruction: Our plastic surgeons work closely with breast surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists to create a seamless, multidisciplinary experience for the breast cancer patient. We provide a warm, supportive environment for the breast cancer patient and offer access to state-of-the-art care. Research has shown that while breast reconstruction does not interfere with treatment or change cancer survival rates, it plays an important role in the emotional recovery process.
