Colon and Rectal Cancer

At Mount Sinai, our surgeons take a multidisciplinary approach to treating colon and rectal cancer, working together with other specialists, such as medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, to make sure we design the best comprehensive care plan for each patient. Our surgical team is experienced in the newest minimally invasive methods, including pioneering work in the transanal use of robotic techniques for rectal cancer, available only through clinical trials. Our goal is not only to treat the cancer, but also help restore regular function of the colon and rectum as quickly as possible.

• Colon Cancer: Your surgeon will choose the best procedure determined by the stage and location of the cancer. Early cancers may be treated with a polypectomy or local excision, while more advanced cancers may require colon resection surgery.
• Rectal Cancer: Based on the stage and location of the rectal cancer, your surgeon may perform a polypectomy or local excision, or turn to leading-edge minimally invasive techniques, such as transanal resection surgery.
