Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)

As men get older, they may develop benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). For years, we treated BPH with a risky surgical procedure. But today, thanks to medical research conducted in part at Mount Sinai, we can offer prostate artery embolization (PAE) to appropriate patients. This minimally invasive procedure is safer than the traditional surgery. At Mount Sinai, we have had great success with PAE. Most men tell us they are very satisfied with the procedure.

How It Works

PAE uses the most advanced imaging and surgical approaches. We perform this procedure under local sedation, which carries fewer risks than general anesthesia. We start by inserting a tiny tube (called a catheter) into your artery through your wrist or groin. Then we use advanced imaging to help us guide the catheter to the arteries feeding the prostate gland. This 3D navigation takes advantage of state-of-the-art interventional radiology X-ray imaging. Once the catheter is in place, we inject small gelatin particles into these small arteries. These beads slow the blood flow to your prostate gland. With less blood getting to the prostate, it starts to shrink.

You will be able to go home the same day, with antibiotics, pain medication, and anti-inflammatory drugs. You may need to urinate more for a few days, but can return to regular activities right away. In addition, you will experience less pain and should feel relief within a few weeks, with mild side effects. Most men see no impact on sexual function.

Why Mount Sinai

At Mount Sinai, we have everything you need for a successful prostate artery embolization procedure. Our state-of-the-art interventional radiology suite has the most advanced equipment available. And our highly trained and skilled experts work as a team to provide care. We have plenty of experience with this procedure. Mount Sinai was one of the health systems involved in the clinical trials leading to the development and FAD approval of PAE. We continue to develop this procedure and serve as a center of excellence for research and trials related to PAE. We will do everything we can do to get you back to your normal life as soon as possible.
