Risk Factors for Meningiomas

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, the cause of meningiomas is unknown. Certain risk factors such as prior radiation to the head, having a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis type 2 and a history of breast cancer, can increase the chance of getting a meningioma. They occur twice as often in women who are middle aged as in men and rarely develop in children. Researchers are also investigating a possible link between hormone replacement therapy and the development of meningiomas.
