Stroke Research

The Mount Health System is a recognized leader in stroke research. Our research focuses on prevention of stroke, treatment of acute stroke, and helping you recover optimally from stroke. We have also explored ways to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke, especially in African Americans and Latinos.

We are currently involved in the following research:

  • In conjunction with the Department of Health Evidence and Policy, we have conducted studies to find out why effective stroke prevention therapies are underused among minority populations. Most recently, we have implemented and evaluated a program to address this issue among patients hospitalized at Mount Sinai and living in local communities.
  • In conjunction with the Department of Neurosurgery, we are participating in two international studies to assess how well clot-busting thrombolytic) medication dissolves blood clots in patients with intracerebral bleeding.
  • In collaboration with the Division of Neuroradiology, we are examining the use of computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning techniques to provide stroke patients with quicker and more accurate diagnoses.
  • We are embarking on a new cooperative study to determine the safety and efficacy of a new therapy to improve recovery after stroke.

Outreach

Despite these accomplishments, it is clear that there is still much work to be done to reduce the burden of stroke in our community. We are actively involved in community outreach activities and in potentially groundbreaking research to help patients who have survived a stroke or transient ischemic attack better manage their chronic conditions.
