Most people are familiar with blocked arteries as a heart problem (the technical name is coronary artery disease, or CAD), but as many as 8-12 million Americans are now living with blockages elsewhere in the body. "PAD, which stands for peripheral arterial disease, is what we call all blockages in the arteries located outside of the heart,” says Dr. Prakash Krishnan from The Mount Sinai Medical Center. “For older adults, PAD is one of the most common but underrecognized causes of morbidity, affecting 12-20% of Americans 65 or older."
