CBS Early Show - Dr. Douglas Dieterich: “Hepatitis C Cure Rate Doubled With New Drug”

“The number of deaths from hepatitis C is expected to increase from 10,000 to 12,000 a year to four times that to 40,000 or 50,000 a year between 2010 and 2020, unless we do something about it,” said Dr. Douglas Dieterich from The Mount Sinai Medical Center. In May, the FDA approved a new class of drugs known as protease inhibitors. Adding the new drugs Victrelis and Incivek to the previous standard therapy almost doubles the cure rate to 79 percent. “This is a big deal,” said Dr. Dieterich. “This is the beginning of the end to hepatitis C.” Learn more
