Pediatric Endoscopy Program
Our pediatric gastroenterologists are specially trained to perform endoscopy on children and interpret the results. Endoscopy is a procedure that enables your doctor to examine the inside of your child’s digestive tract (esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines). To do this, our doctors insert an endoscope--a thin, flexible tube with a light and miniature camerathrough a natural opening in the body to examine the inside of your child’s gastrointestinal tract.
About the Endoscopic Procedure
Preparing properly for the exam is important to provide the gastroenterologist with a clear view inside the digestive tract. We tailor preparation instructions specifically to the needs of your child.
To learn more about preparing your child for this or other medical procedures or to arrange a pre-admission tour, contact the staff at Meet Me at Mount Sinai at 212-241-9403:
- Your child's doctor will coordinate with the Mount Sinai gastrointestinal staff to schedule the endoscopy. A staff member will provide specific preparation instructions, including details about your child's diet leading up to the procedure.
- After registering at the reception desk, you and your child will meet with members of the pediatric gastroenterology staff and a nurse from the endoscopy suite. You will also meet the pediatric anesthesiologist who will be present to sedate your child. Our doctors and staff carefully monitor your child before, during, and after the endoscopy.
- Endoscopy is an outpatient procedure and does not require a hospital stay. Staff will monitor your child in the recovery room and prepare for discharge after he or she wakes up.
