Employer Services at the Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health

Researchers who work with animals face a variety of occupational health risks, including allergic reactions and injuries such as bites, scratches, and kicks. To prevent accidents, most employers require pre-placement and vivarium certification to determine whether laboratory personnel are physically fit to perform animal care and handling. At Mount Sinai’s Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health, our team of physicians and health and safety specialists can assess employees and provide medical clearances. We also perform consultation, testing, immunizations, and exams, all geared to the specific laboratory conditions, hazards, and species appropriate for the individual researcher.

Our Services

At the Selikoff Centers, we work with employers to help you maintain safe and healthy work environments. Our specialists assess your company’s individual needs and provide health and safety protection programs and policies to keep your workers safe and healthy. Our offerings range from assessments and recommendations to classes and trainings to providing medical clearances. Our services include:

  • Laboratory Health and Safety:  Our physicians and health and safety specialists can identify organizational solutions to help prevent injury and illness in your workplace. We analyze your organization to determine your specific needs.
  • Ergonomics and Injury Prevention Program: Our consultants can make recommendations to improve the work environment and personal work habits to prevent physical discomfort and injury. We can also lead seminars on injury prevention.
  • Industrial Hygiene:  Our industrial hygienists help employers develop comprehensive and effective workplace health and safety programs through establishing policies and protocols, hazard assessment plans, as well as education and training programs. We can pinpoint and assess possible exposures to physical, biological, and chemical hazards and help you develop systems to prevent and control exposure.
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being in the moment. We offer classes and leadership training to help individuals learn to cultivate clarity, creativity, and balance. We also offer training sessions.
  • EMS Worker Injury Reduction and Prevention Program: Our educational program for EMS workers starts with identifying safety goals with EMS safety leadership. We then offer hands-on workshops for EMS workers addressing topics such as work postures and body mechanics, and stretches and strengthening exercises.
  • COVID-19 Health and Safety Resources for Workplaces: Through virtual site visits and one-on-one consultations, we can develop programs to reduce your workers’ risk for exposure to COVID-19. We can also perform post-exposure assessment, quarantine and isolation guidance, and return-to-work clearance.
