If you’ve had a runny or stuffy nose that just doesn’t seem to go away, that’s sinusitis. If the symptoms last for three months, the condition is called chronic sinusitis. Sinusitis means the mucus isn’t flowing through the tubes in your nose and head; it’s gotten stuck. And, over time, this can cause swelling, congestion, headaches, or difficulty smelling and tasting. According to the University of Cincinnati, 14.6 percent of adults in the United States have chronic sinusitis.
Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that allows us to open up the blocked sinuses without making an incision. Basically, we use a wire to move a balloon to the infected area. When the balloon is in the right spot, we inflate it, which opens up the sinuses. Once the sinuses are open, we use salt water to wash out the mucus that got stuck. And then, you can breathe more easily.
Because we don’t need to make any incisions, this approach offers a faster recovery time and fewer side effects. We don’t use general anesthesia, which means the procedure is safer and shorter—about an hour. This minimally invasive, office-based procedure has been helping people for many years.
If you need a balloon sinuplasty, Mount Sinai is the place to go. As a large health care system, we have extensive experience with all aspects of sinus disease. Not everybody is a good candidate for balloon sinuplasty. But because we do so many procedures, our doctors can recognize whether the procedure is right for you. Should the need arise, we have access to many specialties and can refer you to another expert. In addition, because we have locations throughout the New York City area, you can find care close to home.
At Mount Sinai, our ear, nose, and throat doctors use the latest techniques in a compassionate setting. Many have advanced training in sinus surgery and also in the balloon sinuplasty procedure. We are here for you.
