Treatments We Provide

We build our approach to treatment around you and your family. Starting with your very first visit, our team—which includes surgeons, bariatric nurse practitioners, bariatric nutritionists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and support group leaders—takes the time to listen to your goals, explain your treatment options, and design a customized care plan for your individual needs.

With five bariatric surgeons, Mount Sinai Morningside performs one of the highest volumes of weight loss surgeries in New York City. This means our specialists have extensive experience handling routine to complex cases with excellent outcomes and low complication rates.

We are skilled in providing several laparoscopic procedures (using small incisions), including the following:

  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch: We remove part of the stomach and form the remaining stomach into an elongated pouch. In addition, we bypass a portion of the small intestine.

  • Gastric bypass surgery: In this procedure, we create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This is the only portion of the stomach that can receive food, which limits how much food can be eaten. We cut the small intestine and attach it to the pouch so it can receive nutrients directly.

  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding: With a “lap band” procedure, we fit an inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach. We also place a port in the abdomen, connected to the band, so fluid can be injected and removed. This adjusts the size of the band, which decreases (or increases) the part of the stomach that can receive food.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy: This technique involves removing part of the stomach. We form the remaining stomach into a narrow, elongated pouch. This also shrinks the usable part of the stomach and the amount that can be eaten.

Patient Education and Support

We are committed to making sure you feel fully informed and warmly supported both before and after surgery. Our preop class meets weekly to provide you instructions and other valuable information to prepare you for surgery. We also have preop support groups to enable you to discuss issues and receive encouragement.

Once surgery is completed, we offer multiple postop support group meetings each month. Groups are in both English and Spanish. We also offer weekly sessions with a wellness coach who leads a fitness class.

In addition, each month we offer Food and Fitness groups. These are free, medically supervised classes covering topics such as healthy weight loss, realistic goal setting, self-motivation, and individualized exercise routines.
