Our cardiologists are highly skilled in the full spectrum of cardiac catheterization procedures, including but not limited to:
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are minimally invasive techniques designed to treat coronary artery disease, and particularly severe aortic stenosis. Mount Sinai Heart is a leader in this emerging treatment, and was one of the first hospitals in the New York metropolitan area to offer both TAVR treatment options available in the United States: the Edwards SAPIEN® Valve and the Medtronic CoreValve ® System.
Angioplasty and Percutaneous Coronary Stenting
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) is a minimally-invasive procedure used to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. The procedure, which used to be known as an angioplasty with stent, uses a catheter fitted with a stent to open the blockage and restore adequate blood flow to the heart. Mount Sinai Heart physicians may use Bare Metal Stents (BMS) or Drug-eluting stents (DES), depending on your specific needs.
Left Main Stenting
The left main coronary artery supplies blood to the heart's left ventricle, which when blocked, impedes blood flow. Traditionally, surgeons have performed open heart surgery to create a detour around the blockage and restore blood flow. Samin K. Sharma, MD, Director of Clinical and Interventional Cardiology, and President of Mount Sinai Heart Network, pioneered a minimally invasive procedure called left main stenting, which involves placing a metal stent coated with a time-release medication into the artery to open the blockage; lowers the risk of complications, shortens hospital stays, and speeds recovery.
