Gender Affirmation Surgery for Transgender and Gender Diverse People

Mount Sinai is the largest gender-affirming surgical program in the country. We take a holistic approach to ensure comprehensive care, before and after any surgical procedure. Gender-affirmation surgery typically includes surgically altering genitalia to better align with gender identity. We offer a broad array of services, from medical care to counseling to fertility preservation, supporting quality of life, comfort, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Our two expert urology-affirming surgeons, Rajveer Purohit, MD and Miroslav Djordjevic, MD, have performed more than 2,000 gender affirmation surgeries. They are co-editors of the textbook Atlas of Operative Techniques in Gender Affirmation Surgery, published by Elsevier.

Dr. Djordjevic and Dr. Purohit are world-renowned for their pioneering gender-affirming work.

Our Services

Dr. Djordjevic and Dr. Purohit have performed more than 2,000 gender-affirmation surgeries, including vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, orchiectomy, and placement of a penile prosthesis. At Mount Sinai Doctors–77th Street Urology, we also provide counseling on fertility preservation, provide second opinions, do repair procedures, and help fix complications.

We are part of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS), the most comprehensive and largest program of its kind in the country, and our primary goal is protecting your health and safety. We understand that preparation for gender-affirmation surgery can be difficult. The team will help you with details informed by the World Professional Association of Transgender Health’s Standards of Care.

Trans-Masculine Procedures

  • Metoidioplasty: the creation of a new phallus using a hormonally enlarged clitoris
  • Phalloplasty: the creation of a new penis using tissue from outside the genitalia
  • Penile Prosthesis Insertion: a final-stage surgery to help facilitate erections

Trans-Feminine Procedures

  • Orchiectomy: the removal of the testicles to decrease hormone requirements
  • Vaginoplasty: the removal of penile and testicular tissues and construction of a vagina

We often see patients who have undergone surgery elsewhere. They come to us for a second opinion or repair, such as fixing a urethral stricture or fistula, helping with misdirected urine stream, as well as incontinence. We also help trans men who have retention of vaginal remnants. Our team has experience with the surgical repair of all these complications.

We also help patients understand their choices with fertility preservation. You may choose to preserve eggs or sperm prior to surgery. We can help guide you with the range of options available to you.

We are here to support you in your choices—with our compassionate and expert team.
