The Alopecia Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss on the scalp, face, or other areas of the body. Scarring alopecia consists of a group of diseases that involve a high degree of inflammation and involves scarring, particularly in more advanced stages, necessitating early treatment.
The Alopecia Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai is the first of its kind—the only centralized center in the United States that brings together compassionate patient care, offering the most advanced treatments, clinical trials with novel drugs, and groundbreaking research, all under one roof. Located on the Upper East Side, the Center is led by Emma Guttman, MD, PhD, a world-renowned expert on inflammatory skin diseases, whose pioneering research on eczema is also bringing new hope for the treatment of alopecia areata and scarring alopecia, as well as other forms of alopecia.
Our care goes beyond the medical, supporting patients—especially children—with the emotional aspects of hair loss as well. For patients and their families, we are not only restoring hair loss, but also self-esteem, confidence, and well-being.

Our Services
Diagnosis: Your physician will give you individualized, compassionate attention while we discuss your symptoms. We select the most appropriate treatment for you, depending on your symptoms and the type of cells that are causing your inflammation. If the patient is a child, we help parents understand the nature of the disease and possible treatments. Diagnosis may require a scalp biopsy or blood tests to confirm the patient’s condition.
Treatments: Common treatments include steroid injections under the skin, oral JAK inhibitors and new biologic treatments, topical sensitizers and topical treatments, or ultraviolet light therapy. We also offer hair restoration for male and female pattern hair loss, with regenerative therapies, oral, and topical medications. Our understanding of alopecia and how it affects the immune system is growing rapidly, and our patients have access to the latest novel treatments offered in our clinical trials unit.
Clinical Trials: The Alopecia Center of Excellence is the foremost center in the United States for research on alopecia areata and scarring alopecia, as well as male pattern hair loss and other forms of alopecia. Our patients have the option to participate in research on groundbreaking treatments, such as clinical trials with an anti-IL-4 receptor monoclonal antibody, dupilumab, and JAK inhibitors, such as ritlecitinib, and other novel treatments.
