The Derfner Foundation has donated $6 million to the Mount Sinai Health System to support the plastic and reconstructive surgery suite within one of its physician offices. Plastic surgeons at the site perform reconstructive surgeries for patients with cancer, those who have suffered injuries and transgender patients seeking gender-affirmation surgery. Mount Sinai said it was the first institution in the city to offer gender-affirmation surgery in 2016, and it has since has performed more than 1,000 such procedures. It includes nine private exam rooms and a 55-inch Microsoft Surface Hub screen, which allows doctors to conduct presurgical planning and anticipate results for reconstructive surgeries. Mount Sinai said the suite will be renamed the Derfner-Lieberman Family Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to recognize Jay Lieberman, a trustee of the foundation and president of property management firm Derfner Management.
