Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center

Situated within The Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine, the Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center works to translate large-scale data from across the Mount Sinai Health System into actionable insights to improve clinical practice. Having arisen amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center encompasses a diverse group of data scientists, engineers, physicians, and researchers whose efforts continue to provide data analytic solutions beyond COVID-19. By harmonizing data streams and deploying new translational tools, we ensure Mount Sinai Health System remains a national leader in patient care.

Our Projects

The Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center’s rapid, multidisciplinary approach has resulted in several tools and resources that enhance clinical research and practice, including the COVID-19 Biobank, COVID360, and the Warrior Watch Study.

COVID-19 Biobank

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a volunteer team of more than 100 Mount Sinai research staff, nurses, doctors, and scientists collected blood samples from more than 900 patients admitted to Health System hospitals. This collection formed the foundation for the COVID-19 Biobank, a critical resource still used within our research community. In partnership with the Human Immune Monitoring Center, we have since generated a diverse set of molecular data using state-of-the-art technologies in immunology and genomics, thereby encouraging further large-scale research of COVID-19.

COVID360

Using data harmonization and predictive modeling, the Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center and the Clinical Data Science team developed a true “bench to bedside” tool that combines medical record information, risk factors, and predictive model output to provide instant insights for clinicians treating COVID-19 patients.

Built in collaboration with design partners at Intuit, COVID360 provides a centralized view of COVID-19-specific patient data—along with visual representations of predictive models developed by Mount Sinai researchers—to inform clinical care within Epic. COVID360 is the first product to incorporate design techniques and data science to assist clinicians as they focus on optimizing patient care. It highlights the benefit of harmonizing data to derive and display insights in an easily digestible manner that ultimately advances patient health.

Warrior Watch Study

Led by Robert Hirten, MD, and Zahi Fayad, PhD, the Warrior Watch study aimed to illuminate the impact of COVID-19 on the psychological well-being of Mount Sinai health care workers. 

For the study, 329 health care workers were asked to wear Apple watches throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with the Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center, researchers then analyzed the data to determine if resilience—the ability to cope with adversity—could be predicted from physiological signals measured by the watch. According to the published findings, the predictive models showed some ability to classify individuals as having high or low resilience from the data gathered.  

Our Focus Areas

In collaboration with the Clinical Data Science team, we use predictive modeling to identify patterns in data, then incorporate these models into easy-to-use provider tools.

By bringing together Mount Sinai’s top experts, the Center serves as a hub where new ways of combining data at once-unimaginable scales are successfully developed.

Along with several key partners across the Health System, the Center maintains a harmonized data-lake that enables unique clinical analytics capabilities.

The Center is focused on the deployment of predictive models from “bench to bedside” for real world use by clinicians throughout Mount Sinai.
