Mount Sinai Cardiologists Recognized With American College of Cardiology Top Honor
Roxana Mehran, MD, FACC, Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials and George Dangas, MD, PhD, FACC, Director of Cardiovascular Innovation, both at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, were honored for their invaluable contributions to the cardiovascular profession on March 19 during the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) 66th Annual Scientific Session in Washington.
Dr. Mehran received the 2017 Bernadine Healy Leadership in Women’s CV Disease Award presented to a Fellow of the ACC who has demonstrated leadership and accomplishment in the field of cardiovascular disease in women exemplified by research, teaching, practice or service. Dr. Dangas received the 2017 Distinguished Teacher Award presented to a Fellow of the ACC who has demonstrated innovative, outstanding teaching characteristics and compassionate qualities and because of these attributes has made major contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine at the national and/or international level.
Eighteen Distinguished Awards were presented at the Annual Scientific Session this year, each recognizing an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine. Recipients were nominated by their peers and then selected by the ACC Awards Committee.
Dr. Mehran is internationally recognized her work as a clinical trial specialist with complex data analyses and outcomes research in the field of interventional cardiology and for her experience in working with regulatory agencies to conduct clinical trials. Her research interests expand from mechanisms of restenosis to treatment and prevention of acute kidney injury in cardiac patients and include advancing treatments for acute coronary syndromes and acute myocardial infarction.
Dr. Dangas is a leading authority in the performance of nonsurgical cardiac and vascular interventions (e.g. stent, angioplasty, atherectomy) using both established and novel techniques and in preventing and dissolving thrombosis in the coronary and peripheral arteries. He is currently serving as the Chair of the American College of Cardiology Interventional Scientific Council and has been a Trustee of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI).
