Mount Sinai Beth Israel has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.  It is the only hospital in New York City to receive the prestigious certification for an orthopedic program.  The award is a symbol of the highest quality safety and care, and recognizes compliance with The Joint Commission’s strict national standards.

Mount Sinai joins an elite group of providers who meet the Advanced Certification standards.  Until now, only seven other orthopedic programs in the United States have been granted this top honor for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.

“This Advanced Certification means we have set the standard for best orthopedic practices in the country,” said Steven Harwin, MD,  Chief,  Adult Reconstruction and Total Joint Replacement, Mount Sinai Beth Israel; Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  “It’s reinforcement to our patients that our orthopedic surgeons performing total hip and knee replacements adhere to the highest standard of care, and their procedures result in excellent outcomes.”

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel underwent a rigorous, four-day, on-site survey in July, where a reviewer from The Joint Commission conducted an exhaustive analysis of care provided to patients requiring total hip and knee replacements.  They examined all aspects, including pre-operative evaluation, the surgery itself, and the patient’s recovery in the hospital following the procedure.  The Joint Commission evaluated specifics involving patient education leading up to the procedure, the safety and success of the surgery, and that patients can function independently at home in the weeks after hospital discharge.

“The Joint Commission recognizes the outstanding quality of care provided by our entire team of caregivers, from nurses in the operating room to physical therapists, internists, and orthopedic surgeons,” said Peter McCann, MD, Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mount Sinai Beth Israel; Professor, Orthopaedics, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  “This honor demonstrates how well our team works together to give patients the absolute best experience.”

“This achievement points out the quality and exceptional orthopedic care at Mount Sinai Beth Israel,” said Leesa Galatz, MD, System Chair, Orthopaedics, Mount Sinai Health System; Mount Sinai Professor, Leni and Peter W. May Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “We are dedicated to giving patients top-level orthopedic care throughout the Mount Sinai Health System.”

The Joint Commission established Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement at the beginning of 2016 in response to a growing number of patients undergoing the procedures.  Other contributing factors in the establishment of this certification were the increased focus on pain management in patients, their quality of life, and having enough mobility to return to their normal, everyday activities.  The Advanced Certification lasts for two years, and recipients have the option to re-apply after it expires.

“We are excited to receive this prestigious certification from The Joint Commission that sets us apart from orthopedic departments across the country,” said Susan Somerville, RN, President, Mount Sinai Beth Israel.  “This is a significant accomplishment for Mount Sinai Beth Israel, and validates our commitment to providing the highest possible level of care to our patients.”

As part of the recent Joint Commission review at the Department of Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, shoulder replacement and spinal fusion surgery were re-certified for the second time. This reflects the highest standards of quality of care for these procedures as defined by The Joint Commission.  Advanced Certification is only offered for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement at this time.
