Dennis S. Charney, MD, was named the American Heart Association’s 2017 Heart & Stroke Ball honoree at a launch celebration for the event produced by the American Heart Association and the Mount Sinai Health System. The celebration took place on Monday, February 6, 2017, at Fred’s at Barneys.

“Life is Why” is a national initiative which emphasizes the emotional connection to the work of the American Heart Association. The campaign encourages people to consider what or whom they are living for and use that as motivation to make lifestyle changes and improve their heart health.

Mount Sinai Heart is among the world’s leading centers for cardiovascular medicine and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies whose mission is to dramatically improve the heart health of patients. U.S. News & World Report ranks The Mount Sinai Hospital among the top U.S. hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery services.

Dr. Charney is the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs for the Mount Sinai Health System. He is also a world-renowned expert in the neurobiology and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, making fundamental contributions to the understanding of the causes of human anxiety, fear, and depression, and the discovery of new treatment for mood and anxiety disorders.

“The American Heart Association is thrilled to be able to honor a physician and leader as great as Dr. Charney at our Heart & Stroke Ball,” said Kathy A. Kauffmann, Senior Vice President of the American Heart Association in New York City.  “It is because of the work of Dr. Charney that we are closer to understanding how the human brain functions and how to treat it.”

The Heart & Stroke Ball is a premier event with a long tradition of attracting top business leaders, physicians, professionals, philanthropists, and other prominent community members who help raise critically needed funds to support the Association’s lifesaving research, education, and community-based initiatives.

“We are proud that the American Heart Association is honoring Dr. Charney,” said Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital.  “Dr. Charney has helped his patients live longer, more productive lives through his research and work on stress and trauma.  We salute him for all he has done and congratulate him on this great recognition.”

The American Heart Association’s Heart & Stroke Ball is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Cipriani Wall Street.  For more information please contact Mandi Cawthon at 212-878-5959 or at mandi.cawthon@heart.org.
