"McCain’s Brain Tumor Is A Particularly Aggressive Type"
Senator John McCain’s tumor is one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, and his family and doctors are deliberating next treatment options. McCain’s doctors have managed to remove the entire tumor that was visible on brain scans. “But this kind of tumor, formally known as gliobastoma multiforme, is aggressive and sneaky. It puts microscopic roots that go deeper into the brain tissue,” explained Joshua Bederson, MD, professor of neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and system chair of neurosurgery of the Mount Sinai Health System. He has no direct knowledge of McCain’s care. Still, a tumor above the eye is a location that permits removal with far less risk of damage to language, motor, and other brain functions than in many other areas, Dr. Bederson added.
