The Center for Disease Control said that 99 percent of contact lens users engage in some sort of hygiene risk behavior. Nearly a million contact lens wearers are diagnosed with some sort of bacterial eye infection each year, some experiencing irreversible complications. Angie Wen, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said wearing contact lenses too long may cause blood vessels to grow and cloud vision. “Your eyes can essentially be starved from oxygen and nutrients. Sometimes if you scratch your cornea by leaving in a contact lens for too long and having it stick to your eye, it can lead to infection, permanent scars, or blindness,” Dr. Wen added.
